Currently I have no way of knowing what journals or direct debits are impacting my bank statements from within the bank reconciliation screen.

Absolutely I would like to do this as part of a broader Bank Reconciliation uplift including bank feeds. We may be able to make a start in 2019 but I imagine final delivery will be beyond that.
I will keep it in the suggestion box and watch votes though.
